We'd like to leap into action, but for this to work, we need a some people who are more or less on the same page. We would like people who share liberal/progressive values and who are open to some thought about what those values really mean. That means more talk. We picked some things we think should be changed - things that we think are annoying or "unfair". The reasons why and the "how to" need some explanation. As much as we would like to think so, we are probably not smart enough to solve all of the worlds problems. What we have is a set of essays that identify some of the problems. We are trying to bring together ideas from a number of areas: economics, psychology, politics, chaos theory, emergent systems, taoism and anything else that helps to understand why things work the way that they do. We want to know the real "rules" -- so we can use them or break them. These are not intended to be logical proofs. With luck, they will give you some ideas to think about and some ideas to argue about. With even more luck, people with progressive values will stick around and contribute new ideas. Neo-cons will hopefully go away and call us names from somewhere else. We like broad generalizations and arguments by analogy. We also like anecdotal evidence. Anecdotes do not actually prove anything, but sometimes they give a clue that there is something going on that requires some thought. We want to bring out some ideas that contradict the prevailing "wisdom". There are a lot of things that we simply accept as "the way things are done", or the "way it's supposed to be". We hardly ever think about why it's supposed to be that way, or what would happen if we did something else. We start with a few simple goals. We don't have the resources or the knowlege to achieve those goals. In order to get that knowlege we need some people with common sense, and some other people with specialized technical knowlege in a number of areas. We are setting up this site on a subscription basis. We chose this approach for two reasons. One, we need some money to make the plan work. Two, we want a certain amount of committment from the people who participate. In the best free-enterpirse spirit, we set it up so that if you subscribe, you also get to make some money. You can register for free and have access to basic site data. Access to the forums and other areas requires paid membership.
