Changing the world

adamjones posted on August 10, 2010 15:23

This section is aimed at people who want to change the world. People who would call themselves populists - or progressives - or even Liberals.

Leaving out the fact that the world doesn't much want to be changed, for most of us this is more of a hobby than a real plan. We know the problems. We write blogs. We make comments on other peoples blogs. We sign petitions. Some of us are more active and engage in civil disobedience.

We know what needs to be changed; but for all of out talking and writing, nothing really changes.

We live in a society where predatory corporations control our government for their own benefit. These same corporations have come close to destroying the world economy.

If you like, you can wait around for your "representatives" to wake up and take charge. Anyone honest with themselves realizes that this is not going to happen.

There are people who want to overthrow the system and replace it with socialism, or communism or whatever. It's been tried. Most of the time, the opposition wins.

Others want less ambitious political changes: a third party, or a parliamentary system. The same thing applies: If you do make it happen, you probably won't like it when you get it.

So what's the solution? It's called free-enterprise.

A few people are going to react instantly and assume that "free-enterprise" or "capitalism" stands for everything that is evil in the world.

You might say the same thing about double-entry bookkeeping. Almost every predatory corporation on the planet uses double entry bookkeeping to count the loot.

Even if you are a dedicated liberal or a wanna-be socialist, you have to admit that it has worked pretty well for the people who robbed you blind.

Free-enterprise works very well for people whose only interest is money.

Free-enterprise doesn't work well for progressives or populists. If your goal is something other than money, free-enterprise is a distraction from what you really want to do.
